SMELLS LIKE BUTTER

Following the drafting of the Japanese Constitution by the Americans in 1946, a journalist proclaimed that it “Smells Like Butter”- meaning that it was quite obviously created by White Americans, whose body odour the Japanese consider to be of beef and dairy.

Through the lens of the Onnagata (men playing women) from Kabuki Theatre, this performance discusses cultural appropriation, men appropriating the female gender and the queer performance framework of the West.
